According to a study by HubSpot “tweets with images resulted in 18% more click throughs and 150% more retweets.” This simply means, you have to have images in your tweets if you want more engagement. However, images cost you 23 characters… till now! This week Twitter announced that soon media (e.g., images, polls, videos,GIFs) attached to tweets will no longer count against your 140-character count! That means you may be able to actually write “and” instead of “&” in future tweets. We can use the english language to express our quick thoughts instead of broken and strange abbreviations.
The company also announced that @names will no longer count toward your 140-character window, so you have more space to be clever. You can now mention two people, add a photo, and still have characters left to express your intended thought.
You would think that links to articles or web pages would also be excluded with these new developments. However, unfortunately they still count against the 140 character limit so stick with a URL shortener for those.
These changes came about after Twitter asked itself some tough questions. According to the internet, the goal is to make tweeting and conversations more intuitive and make them more expressive.
There are other updates and changes to the way we reply and retweet, but I have to say the 140 character rule revision really made me excited. I look forward to seeing how these changes affect my twitter feed.
What do you think about Twitter’s edits?
