I was talking with a friend this week about the reorganization of the company where she works. A colleague is being demoted from the job she has had for ten years, and the manager didn't think this demotion would drive the employee our of the company due to her old age of 49.
Next week I will be 44. I don't feel old. I feel mentally sharp and physically fit. I juggle many things as a business owner, a mom a weekend athlete ( I just ran a half marathon two months ago). I just don't feel old. I have spent 15 years in corporate, owned and grown a business, beginning a new business. I feel I am finally hitting my stride in my career and can be seen as an expert in my field.

I'm trying to figure out where my career will peak. There is a balance of experiencing enough in your career that people see you as an expert in your field, and not too old that you are seen as having one foot in retirement. There are very few who can be seen as an industry expert in their 20's or even 30's. So you finally hit the pinnacle of your career, but how long will this stage last? Is there are secret number where you are no longer valuable to a company? Is there a threshold you must reach before age halts your career?
If there is a secret number I need to know. I met with my financial advisor this week and had to determine when I would be ready to retire. In my head I said 70. I don't even know at 70 if I will fully retire. I've always worked, even as a kid I found ways to earn money in my own entrepreneurial way. Even if I am still working, will this be part of my 'career', or a job to keep me busy and pay for daily needs? Should I be all saved up by 50 or 60? At 50 I will have two kids in college.
What do you think is the secret age where your career peaks? Is 50 the magic number? After that peak, how many years do you have before companies no longer see you as relevant?
