There are some things, that no-one else but the entrepreneur in a small business can do. It almost makes them indispensible although we are all trained to think that no-one is this.
Today, I am in sunny Perth. What a treat to get out of the cold, rainy weather of the East Coast and enjoy some sunshine and a really meaty project.
My Victorian Manager is away at the moment on annual leave and one of her clients needed some urgent work done by a senior marketer. So, I hopped on a plane to Perth and here I am. An 11 hour day in the office of a client, doing a strategic marketing workshop - and gosh, it feels good. It feels great.
To share ideas and challenge others with your client and embrace all aspects of the marketing mix in a meaningful way, lifts any organisation. I am thrilled to be in the cold face of what we do day-in, day-out for our clients and to see how they interact with Marketing Eye.
They say good managers meet and greet their customers and understand them inside out. Often when you are at the top of the chain, it's difficult to find as much time as you would like to work with your clients and get your hands dirty so to speak.
It's hard work and not for the faint hearted, but I am very motivated by the process and the feedback from our client. I get to know what value our people bring to their organisations and the trust they have in us to build a strategic marketing plan that is going to help build their business to new heights.
They as entrepreneurs share ideas with us as marketers and vice-versa. We learn new things from them that we may not have learned elsewhere and it gives us a greater insight into the runnings of a small business that is looking for aggressive growth. Often the entrepreneur in an organisation is sales focused and as marketers, we need to be more aligned to sales teams who work one-on-one with clients. They know things that we are not privy to and often marketers have an ignorance in thinking that they know more. But as they say, without sales, there is no business.
Overall, today has been magnificent and fulfilling in so many ways. When was the last time you got down and dirty with your clients?
