Marketing Consultant Shares Insights blog

On the weekend I was chatting to a person about business as I do from time to time. As they told the story of their journey as an entrepreneur, I listened intently.

When they had finished, I paused.

They had reached a certain level, but couldn't quite make it to the next stage. In this case, ambition was greater than their ability to deliver upon their goals. The business person couldn't quite figure out what was holding them back.

But I could.
Are you sabotaging your success?

They were sabotaging their own success.

Not unlike Sarah Lacy in Startup Silicon Valley, a television show produced by Mark Zuckerberg's older sister Randi, who allowed her insecurities and jealousy issues over shadow her talent for blogging and public relations - this person, has done exactly the same.

By worrying too much about what everyone else is doing and not getting on with the job at hand, an entrepreneur is bound to lose track of what they are really trying to achieve.

If you focus too much on everyone else, and not enough on yourself and your business plan, ultimately your business is going to suffer.

I didn't grow up a fighter, and I possibly don't have a fight in me. But I guess if you always feel like you have to fight, your energy goes into the negative sphere and you won't be able to capitalize on the positive.

Things you could be doing to sabotage your success:

1.  Focusing on a glass half empty;
2.  Being jealous of your competitor or those around you - a completely wasted emotion;
3.  Thinking that because someone else has been successful, they don't deserve it;
4.  Cutting off your nose in spite of your face - over and over again;
5.  Acting out to get attention or because you feel like someone doesn't like you or respect you;
6.  Not treating every person with kindness;
7.  Holding back when an opportunity presents itself;
8.  Talking yourself up with no substance;
9.  Lying; and
10. Not believing in yourself and your own capabilities. Blaming your childhood or the fact that your parents where not rich for your lack of opportunities.

It's so important to believe in yourself and to learn from those around you. Listen when people are talking, and be open to change. If you really want it, you can achieve it.

And most importantly, as my friends at Atlanta Technology Village would say; dream big and be nice.
