If you think about the fact that there are only 7 billion people reportedly on the planet, Facebook has a staggering 14% as friends.
In July 2010, they had half that. 500 million registered users to be precise. So, how in 26 months have they increased to double that size excluding China, because its banned there?
The newly public listed company has to make money and now they have 1 billion ways to make that happen. Imagine as a business if you had 1 billion people who "liked" you in your database?
Launching the company's first branding video, Facebook really has a 'skies the limit' philosophy and so they should.
There are only 2.3 billion regular internet users in the world, and it will be interesting to see how many more users Facebook can muster.
Not withstanding the fact that the company's focus has to be on making money right now, Facebook is sure to "is part of a tradition of things that connect us".
In a message from Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg in a personal post yesterday, Zuckerberg gave his spiel. Secretly he must be high fiving the air in excitement that a Harvard dropout now has 1 billion friends. Fairly impressive.
Founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a personal profile post on Thursday:
"Celebrating a billion people is very special to me. It's a moment to honor the people we serve.
"For the first time in our history, we've made a brand video to express what our place is on this earth.
"We believe that the need to open up and connect is what makes us human. It's what brings us together. It's what brings meaning to our lives.
"Facebook isn't the first thing people have made to help us connect. We belong to a rich tradition of people making things that bring us together.
"Today, we honor this tradition.
"We honor the humanity of the people we serve.
"We honor the everyday things people have always made to bring us together:
"Chairs, doorbells, airplanes, bridges, games. These are all things that connect us.
And now Facebook is a part of this tradition of things that connect us too."
What is your tip on where Facebook will go from here? Will Myspace start stealing some of Facebook's thunder?
