Like most women, looking for ‘answers’, I queued to see the two and a half hour screening of this much anticipated movie even though most of my counterparts begged me to give it a miss.
Julia Roberts has always been one of my favourite movie stars. Since she made being a hooker look glamorous in Pretty Woman with the dashing Richard Gere, her million dollar smile and girl next door appeal has always won me over – good movie or bad movie.
The movie Eat, Pray, Love is about a journey of a newly divorced woman’s life where she explores Italy (and ‘Eats’), meditates in India (and ‘Prays’) and finds someone in Bali (aka ‘Loves’).
As I sit back and ponder over the last couple of hours of watching the movie on the big screen, I can’t help but think about my life and how important it is to find happiness by finding yourself. Like many people, alot of my identity is deeply entrenched in being a businesswoman and marketer rather than who I really am. Whilst I cannot profess to know who I am in its true enormity, I can say that as I have gotten older, I am more in touch with what I like and what I do not, my flaws and a more realistic picture of the person I am.
Everyone wants to know the ‘real’ them and yet how many of us take time out to find what we really want to know? Do many of us have time out where we sit in silence, looking at the way the water ripples with a slight breeze, and the fish slowly but surely rising to the top of a pond, in search or the way the clouds form before a storm is about to erupt?
Each year, I take time out to think about my business and where I want to go. If I looked closely at a normal year, I can see how ‘eat, pray, love’ fits even into my business life. I ‘eat’ up the true essences of what makes a great business and absorb it with such vigour, I overflow with what one can describe as a ‘muffin top’. I ‘pray’ like crazy that everything falls into place and that one big idea takes off and makes the business even more successful. Then, I ‘love’ or more precisely, fall back in love, with the business that I and the team around me have built.
Some may say its sad to always bring stuff back to work, but we all have to do what is relevant to our own lives and not be detered by what others might think.
This week, take time out for yourself and meditate, do yoga, breathe and remember to find love…
