Without profit, a professional services business is nothing.
Our focus this year is a minimum of 30 percent gross profit per office month-on-month. It's something we regularly achieve, but we are hoping that it becomes just a normal part of our business even after we open a bunch of new offices. We give a new office 4 months to be profitable, then after that, they need to stand on their own two feet.
This is of course all good and well, but it isn't everything. In fact, I have found that innovation has given me more pleasure than any monetary return I may get from business. The fact that I can "invent" something that will change an industry is more a bucket list item than any financial success.
But there is something that is more important and that is life and living. As I get older I become more and more aware at just how much of my mind space is taken up with work related items, and how little time I leave left for living and for the most important things in life like family, loved one's and friends.
When you die, no-one wants to be known for their work - do they? Well, some do. I don't.
So while I understand and appreciate money and without it, I wouldn't be able to fund The World Incubator, a not-for-profit aimed at helping startups get their businesses off the ground, and live the life I do.
However, living life is everything and there is nothing that compares to the smile that not only extends on your face, but inside your heart, when something personal is accomplished or a loved one of any description does something special.
Remember that!
