“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes.
Creativity like nothing else
Fact: When you’re travelling, it’s guaranteed that at some point you’ll be forced to get creative in order to overcome an obstacle in your path. It will generally take a little thinking outside the box to get by certain challenges. You could be faced with sold out buses to your next destination, you could enter a toilet and be faced with nothing but a hole in the ground or you could be faced with the dilemma of trying to wash your clothes without any supplies. With a little bit of quick thinking, and creative tactics, you’ll have no real issues. Travelling is not all it’s cut out to be, there will always be some type of obstacle to overcome forcing you to get creative.
Marketers who have done a bit of travelling, tend to naturally think more creatively and tend to be better at adjusting to new situations when putting their work to play– imperative in this industry at the rate it’s changing!!
You learn to change quickly
When you’re travelling, it’s inevitable to avoid change. If we’re being realistic something is 110% bound to go not according to plan. Anything can happen and you could find yourself in any type of strange, stressful, dangerous or unplanned situation. Travelling really is burdened with facing the unknown but you learn to think on your feet and work to solve problems efficiently.
Change is the biggest factor which tends to separate the good marketers from the great. In such a fast-paced and innovative industry, a great marketer will be able to seamlessly adapt to new systems, process, platforms etc., working to reach the best outcome.
There’s no one formula
As a marketer, travelling will help you to forget what’s familiar and embrace the unknown as you experience what other cultures have to offer. When it comes to marketing, there really is no 'one formula' that will provide you with the answer you think, whilst marketing is all about thinking outside the box what better way to open your horizons than to go travelling and experience the world for yourself.
Travel is about taking you out of your comfort zone, away from what you consider 'normal' and showing you that 'normal' can be defined a billion different ways.
There really is no one 'right' way to interpret or view a situation or action - it's not wrong, it's different. We live in such a multicultural era that marketers who are exposed to different cultures, customs and countries are able to utilise their experiences to tailor their marketing methods and communications more effectively. So how is your marketing campaign going to stand out from the crowd and have a higher chance of being successful? Practice, experience and a little creativity is key.
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta. Marketers make the best storytellers.
