New technologies are coming out every day, but it is no surprise that this technology is definitely going to be one that sticks. What researchers and engineers are doing is pulling graphics out of screens albeit a cell phone, a computer screen or a television set, and integrating them into a real-world environment.
This new and exciting technology blurs the lines between what is real and what is computer generated by enhancing what we see, hear, feel and smell.
Augmented reality adds graphics, sounds, haptic feedback and smell to the natural world as it exists, with cell phones being named as one of the key drivers.
Marketers are using augmented technology largely for traditional pop-ups like business cards, tourism experiences and product and service education - changing the way we see these formats, and the world in general.
Picture yourself showing someone at a networking event your business card, then as they scan the business card with their cell phone, you pop up with your 1 minute sales pitch introducing who you are, what you do and how you can benefit their business or them as individuals.
So who is using it? Not too many people as yet as it is new, but early adopters of this new technology will be more memorable and create greater cut-through than those who are behind the curve.
For smaller businesses it is easy to adopt, but for large corporations, it is a large-scale marketing movement that may be costly and take time to adopt.
To find out more about augmented technology and how it is used in digital marketing, Australian company, One Fat Sheep, specializes in developing digital strategies, with a twist.
