It makes me cry to think that I can’t be a ‘natural’ at everything I do because god I want to be!


How easy would life be? Really? Imagine it. Everything you touch - turns out your a natural. Life would be great.

But unfortunately life isn’t quite like that. There is a reality. Even Tiger practises.

The areas in life that I feel pretty confident with – like for instance – work. I have been doing pretty much the same job for the past 19 years – give and take the hierarchy changes at my places of work. Now I am the boss rather than the junior executive!

If you asked me, I am very good at what I do and I personally can mean the difference between a client meeting their sales objectives or not. I still get chuffed when I come up with a brilliant idea or a campaign that really rocks the socks off the business we are doing marketing for. The reality is though that I practise and practise and practise. Every day, every sign, every newspaper, every television commercial, every shop, every experience. I practise analysing whether it is good or bad branding, advertising, public relations, websites – you name it – I have analysed it according to my knowledge of marketing and my thoughts as a customer, made a decision as to whether it was good or bad.

When I come back from a lengthy holiday, like anything, I feel rusty. I am not so quick off my feet. I am thinking about laying in sunshine rather than how my client gets their next sale. I like sunsets on websites when in fact they should have been dead and buried in the eighties alongside big shoulder pads and shaggy perms.

I play a little bit of golf. I love it so much that I started a website (www.womensgolflife.com) . When I had a coach and visited him every week, I was improving so much that I began to think that one day I might be ok at this sport. Then I got busy, swapped States and moved across the road from a golf course – k’bang! I have been there once in twelve months, had about 6 rounds of golf and about 4 lessons. The last time I played, it was as if I had never played before. I forgot how to hold the club – and no-one decided to remind me! Great friends I have! It affected the way I hit the ball as I couldn’t move my wrist into the right position to come back and hit the ball as I should. I lifted my head too soon and really did everything other than stick my bum out when I should – wrong.

I need practise. One hour later with Kate at the driving range and Bob’s your uncle! I am hitting the ball again. Not as straight as I would like to, but certainly up in the air and the distance I am aiming for.

The moral of this very long story (sorry!) is that practise does make perfect. Unless you are a natural at everything, you need to come to terms with this reality.

In marketing, practise writing the perfect letter to your clients, practise talking to your clients in a way that they can resonate with, practise being more organised, practise researching your clients and then seeing how their successes can be your successes. Practise being a better marketer for your business.
