Marketing Consultant Shares Insights blog

Today, September 27, 2019, everyone’s favorite search engine turned 21 years old. What began as a merely an idea, a paper published by Stanford PhD students Sergey Brin and Larry Page called “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine”, has become a multibillion-dollar company and the most popular search engine by a wide margin. Not only is it a search engine, but Google has its own browser with its very own suite of services like Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets and cloud storage with Google Drive. In a matter of merely 21 years, Google has become the primary way that people search the internet. How did this happen? Now that Google is of legal drinking age in the US, let’s take a look at how they got where they are today.

Google Turns 21 Today

It starts with an idea

When you boil it down to its very basic components, Google is a fairly simple idea. The execution isn’t easy, but the idea of a general, easy-to-use search engine that provided better search results seems like an easy enough concept to develop. The only real reason that Google exists today is that it started as an idea. The only difference between the idea of those Stanford PhD students and the ideas that you have is the drive to execute their idea. When you formulate your plans for your business, put them into action. Take risks. Boldness isn’t always rewarding, but a lot of the good ideas are bold ideas. Show the world that you are ready to change it.

We recognize the brand

Google is recognized the world over for what it does. Google has even become its very own adjective. When someone has a question that no one knows the answer to, what do we tell them to do? “Google it.” This is because Google’s brand integration is seamless. We know the logo, we know the brand, and we know how it works. One of the bigger reasons Google is worth so much is because of the way it utilized advertising. Google was one of the first search engines of this magnitude to take advantage of online advertising, mostly because online advertising began to develop after Google got started. Take advantage of the opportunities around you and keep your branding consistent across the board.

The service works

The best thing about Google is that it works well. It’s the number one search engine for a reason, so if you work to provide a service or a product that works, people will start to talk. Disruption is a great way to make a name for yourself, but it’s hard work. Provide something that people desperate need. Once you begin to fulfil the needs of your customers, you will start to grow and succeed.

There may not be another disrupter like Google for quite some time. And not every company should strive to upset the balance of things, or even try to be Google. But, if you take your little seeds of an idea and cultivate them in the right way, your company might be next!
