Thanks to the internet, there are numerous platforms to communicate with your audience. It is truly amazing how many people recognize the importance of using social media, yet they fail to utilize it.
Did you know that your audience is spending 50% of their time on their mobile device? If they aren’t playing a game or checking their email, they are checking their social media accounts. If you are not trying to communicate with them on social media, you are setting yourself up for failure.
You’ve read every book, subscribed to every blog, and watched every video to learn about how to get the most out of your social media accounts. You may even consider yourself to be quite knowledgeable about advertising on Facebook, or growing Instagram followers. My question to you is, how have you implemented what you have learned? It is time stop talking about what you know, and start doing it.
There are 3 big questions you need to answer when trying to obtain a social media following:
What am I going to talk about?
You've created your Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Snapchat accounts; now it is time to tell people what you have to offer them. This is a fun and time-consuming process called content creation. This is where you figure out how to show your audience what they need you for and why they should listen to what you have to say. When marketing anything, it is essential to produce content for your audience. Simply answer the question, “what does my audience want?”
How will they find me?
This is a waiting game. You will not build an audience overnight, but there are tricks to help your audience find you more swiftly. First, create content for a niche group. Start following people that fit that niche. Direct message them and tell them about the services you offer - many won’t reply but this is where patience is key. Second, don’t just expect people to come to you - engage with relevant people by liking and sharing their posts and participating in groups and pages on Facebook and LinkedIn. Third, always add links to your website so that people are drawn to it- this will also boost your SEO. Finally, consistently post useful and engaging content to keep your audience interested in what you have to say.
Where do I post my content?
Just because there are a variety of social media platforms doesn’t mean you should be using all of them. This is where knowing your strengths becomes especially important. Are you a skilled writer? Start blogging on Facebook and through Instagram captions. Are you articulate and an exceptional speaker? Start making videos on Facebook Live, SnapChat or YouTube. Doing what you are good at will always get your message to your audience in the most effective manner.
Building an audience is not a linear process. It will not happen overnight require a lot of A/B testing. When one method doesn’t seem to be working, try another approach. Whatever you do, keep producing content that tells your story. The only way you can fail is if you don’t give social media the recognition everyone else is giving it.
