I never bore of New York. I have always imagined that I would one day live there. I could have three years ago, but due to personal circumstances I thought it was best to set up shop in Atlanta. I didn't want to be seen to "follow" someone else's path. Fortunately, I have since learned that that was my own insecurity, and if I want to do something, then I should go ahead and do it.
The last few trips to New York has been about soaking up all it has to offer; bright lights, yellow taxi's, tall buildings, energy and of course business.
The latter, my one great love.
As I wonder the streets, I look at the pokey little apartments that people call home. Rather than turn my nose up at it (I'm Australian and I live in the fourth most livable city in the world, Melbourne), it excites me. Space is a luxury in New York, but that is exactly why everyone is out doing things - making things happen by living out amongst it all.
I can't imagine what it would be like to grow up in New York, but I do imagine that coming here after the fact can either make or break you. You may choose to be scared by its enormity, or embrace it like one big opportunity.
I don't feel this type of energy anywhere else in the world.
Paris is sophisticated style. London, old school charm. Sydney, the best of every world. Melbourne, a big multicultural country town. Singapore, clean as a whistle. Los Angeles, sunshine and people watching. San Francisco, a tech hub. New York, energetic with possibility.
When deciding to grow my business internationally, I always thought Europe would be my first stop. Don't get me wrong, I did look into it thoroughly, but there are hurdles to overcome when choosing to expand to Europe. Whereas in the US the world is your oyster. A big market with lots of opportunities. It's harder in the US in some ways as there are so many Australians and its no longer a novelty. There is also so much competition and many businesses there are hard to compete with.
But for us, its a dream come true. We have the right people in place with the determination to see the business grow. I love dipping my toes in when need be and watching from afar. Working "on" the business, not "in" the business being my main aim.
Today, I sit here typing this blog feeling quietly chuffed. Things are coming together. Everything is as it should be. My life is beyond my wildest dreams and I don't have anything to prove. I just have a business plan to finish and life that is adventurous, real and based around kindness. It couldn't be more perfect.
